We travelled on Red Dragon 2 on a two day one night trip. We loved
everything about our experience. The junk was beautifully made of
wood and we had the large cabib which had two windows to watch the
karsts go by. It was quiet and very comfortable well away from any
generator noise. As others have said the only other boats we saw
were the other Red Dragon boat and one other so the experience was
intimate and secluded. The food was brilliant and though the weather
was foggy this made for a more ethereal experience. While it was
probably the most expensive thing we did in Vietnam it was worth
every cent and we would recommend it to everyone.

We booked Red dragon
based on the reviews on TripAdvisor, and were very pleased with our
trip. We were a family of four adults, staying
the Dragon Pearl 2 on
a two day/one night tour.
I have nothing but good things to say about this tour. Having been
on many cruises on both small and very large ships, I was very
surprised by the facilities available on this relatively small boat.
Our standard rooms were spacious, with large windows that were able
to be opened for breeze, air-conditioning, reading lights and a
lovely ensuite with a modern shower and a port-hole window for
beautiful views and the feel of an 'outdoor' shower.
The food was amazing and probably the best we had on our trip to
Hanoi, 9-10 course meals with lots of fresh seafood. Guests with
specific food requests seemed to ne well-catered for. There were a
total of 9 guests on the boat, which was lovely and never did it
feel overcrowded. All meals were served on the back deck, with warm
breezes and the beautiful vista of
Halong bay. The
service was impeccable and our tour guide Ha was friendly and always
helpful.
Above the dining floor there were two open decks with sun chairs for
relaxing and taking in the beautiful views.
If I did this again, I would do the three days/two nights tour, as
the commute takes about 10 hours return in a mini-van, and we felt
we did not get enough time to relax on the boat. My main concern was
being able to sleep in potentially turbulent open waters, but the
waters of Halong bay
are sheltered and were completely still, even two days after a major
typhoon!
I hope to be back.

We did the 2 day 1 night trip on
red dragon 1. The trip
from Hanoi to Ha Long bay
is long, but they stop halfway at some tourist trap to stretch your
legs and grab a drink.
There was only a small family and another couple on the boat with us
so it was very quiet and subdued.
The staff were very friendly and the boat and rooms were very well
kept, although the bed was very hard.
The food on board was a bit mixed. We really enjoyed the first
lunch, but were not too impressed with the dinner or second lunch.
The best part of this trip was relaxing in the sun chairs and
watching the beauty of Ha
Long bay pass by. Our guide was lovely and enthusiastic. You
could really tell he loved his job.
“A long
trip made easy by this cruise. Very happy.”

We just spent
a 2 day 1 night tour with
Red Dragon 1 and it was exceptional.
After boarding we are formally introduced to the staff serving us
and the captain makes a little speech to much applause. It was
really cute.
The boat has 5 cabins to take on 10 people....lucky for us there was
only one other couple on board so we had plenty of space and enjoyed
their company for meals.
The meals are just amazing...so fresh and plenty of it. Lunch after
boarding is 7 courses and dinner is 9 courses. All with great
variety and flavour.
Cruising Halong Bay is
just fabulous and the agenda of the tour is excellent....taking in
all activities on time and as per plan.
The only downside to this tour is getting there and getting back to
the hotel. It is a torturous ride in a bus. It is air conditioned
but the drivers drive to a schedule so its always going to be over 3
hours each way with a rest stop at a place where you get hassled to
by junk.
My tip here is to hire a car to do the transfers. A private car
would be far easier on the muscles and head.
If they had a helicopter service here I would use that and avoid the
roads altogether.
Other than that we had a great time, great food and great company as
well as first class service......highly recommended and worth the
slightly higher price of other operators.

Steve McKenna leaves the crowds behind to enjoy the myths and magic
of Halong Bay.
In recent years, the emerald waters of Vietnam's Halong Bay have
become clogged with cruise liners. The phrase "quantity over
quality" sprang to mind when I heard fellow holidaymakers moaning
about shabby old junks with cramped cabins, surly staff, terrible
food and boisterous backpackers.
The Red Dragon, on the other hand, seemed almost too good to be
true. This swish new boat promised not just style and seafood to die
for, but some elusive serenity as well. Read

We have jut returned from the cruise with my husband, self and 4
year old son. This boat is wonderful. The rooms are lovely and the
bathroom very elegant. Our tour guide was wonderful and the food is
too die for. Some of the best we have had.

Overall, this
was a fantastic opportunity to go off the beaten track to explore
Halong Bay. You travel with a fleet of Red Dragon boats (maybe 4-5
Lagoon Explorer, etc.) but the fleet is the only one in sight. We
took a 2D/1N journey. On the first day we anchored near and had the
opportunity to kayak before dinner. Took a tour of the limestone
caves.
Unfortunately we couldn't enjoy the beautifully prepared meals as we
were recovering from a bout of food poisoning from the previous
nights hotel stay :-( It looked beautiful and the other guests raved
about it. The staff was so accommodating and helpful - offering us
bread and other light food to help us recover.
The ship was very clean and the rooms were comfortable. However, I
do agree with a previous poster about the noise however. We are a
family of 4 (2adults, 2children) so we rented 2 cabins - one of
which was near the generator and it was awfully loud. If possible,
try to request a cabin further to the front of the boat away from
the noise. Alternatively, try to book the front cabin which is
larger (double and twin beds?) and has a fantastic view.
Overall, thumbs up!

A great boat, great staff and all-up an excellently presented ship
and experience. Had great company with lovely people, enjoyed
fantastic food with restaurant quality service. A comfortable
night's sleep and spectacular views, even from from the cabin. The
VIEW is amazing, photo's viewed before the trip simply don't do this
place justice. Unlike other Halong Bay cruises, this cruise seems to
take a more secluded route that makes the experience far more
intimate than others. We were one of 4 boats from the same company,
a total of about 25 people all up, yet only 9 of us on the Red
Dragon 1. The planned activities were very personal, the
kayaking and cave. You feel like your the only one on the bay and
wherever you look, you sigh with amazement.
Only one small glitch to the trip, not long after breakfast the
second morning, when a strong storm came out of no-where and panic
arose, resembling a scene not unlike that from "TITANIC", leaving
little to be said about the safety training standards of the crew on
board, who really didn't seem to know how to cope with the
situation.
But apart from this don't let it fool you, the Red Dragon was an
adventure! Highly recommend it!

I echo what other reviewers have said about the boat, the space, and
the food. But - the staff were a bit slow at making sure we had
drinks and at one point we went and helped ourselves because there
were no staff around.
Red Dragon operate from a different dock to the main Halong Bay dock
and therefore you are kept away from the hoards of tourists who
visit daily. It allows you to experience the majesty of the place
without feeling you are one of thousands.
The photos advertising Halong Bay are all taken when the sun is
shining - don't be fooled; it only shines about 5 days a year and the
rest of the time it is misty which gives it an eerie ethereal
quality.
